Most people arrive in Alberobello, photograph a few trulli, buy a souvenir and leave before lunch. Which is a shame, because the town only really begins to reveal itself once the tour buses have gone.

Every destination has someone who knows how it’s really lived. The cafés where mornings begin, the roads worth taking, the butcher everyone stops at before dinner. In Alberobello, that person is Elena.

Together with her family, she welcomes guests to her charming Trullo, just outside the UNESCO district. Having grown up here, she knows the Valle d’Itria beyond the postcard views; not as a destination, but as home.

We asked Elena to share the places she returns to again and again. Her favourite rituals, addresses and small detours that make this corner of Puglia feel so special.

That is the Alberobello Elena knows.

She’ll tell you to leave the car at the trullo and walk into town. Not because parking is difficult (although it is), but because arriving on foot changes your relationship with the place. The streets become quieter. You notice gardens hidden behind stone walls. Elderly neighbours watering plants. The smell of bread before you see the bakery.

By eight o’clock the photographers have already claimed their postcard corners. By nine the town belongs to everyone else.

Forget the Main Street

There are two Alberobellos.

One is Rione Monti, the one you’ve already seen on Instagram.

The other is Aia Piccola.

No souvenir shops. No crowds following umbrellas. Just hundreds of trulli that people still call home. Laundry hangs between whitewashed walls. Cats sleep on warm stone steps. It’s the sort of place where you stop looking for the perfect photograph because you’re too busy looking around.

This is where Elena always wanders.

Breakfast Isn’t a Checklist

She starts the day at Dulcis.

Not because it’s famous, but because it’s where mornings begin. Coffee. Something sweet. Watching neighbours greet one another before work.

Afterwards there is no route.

That’s important.

The best mornings in Alberobello happen when you don’t decide where you’re going.

Eat Like You’re Staying, Not Visiting

The mistake most visitors make is booking restaurants every night.

Locals don’t.

Instead they collect things throughout the day.

Fresh mozzarella from Signora Maria.

Taralli still warm from the bakery.

Olive oil from Intini.

Perhaps meat from Pasqualino, where fornello pronto has been feeding local families for generations.

A bottle of wine.

Dinner almost assembles itself.

Summer Happens After the Beach

One of the things Elena laughs about is how visitors spend the hottest part of the day wandering inland.

The locals do the opposite.

Mornings belong to the Adriatic; Monopoli, Savelletri, Torre Canne.

Late afternoon everyone drifts back towards the Valle d’Itria.

Alberobello sits almost 500 metres above sea level, and you feel it immediately. The air softens. The evenings stretch longer. Somewhere nearby there’s always a village festival, live music or an impromptu food celebration.

No one seems to be in a hurry.

The Roads Matter as Much as the Towns

One of the best pieces of advice Elena gives isn’t about Alberobello at all.

Take the back roads.

Drive towards Noci instead of following Google Maps.

The landscape is the destination.

Dry-stone walls. Fig trees. Vineyards. Trulli appearing unexpectedly in olive groves. A roadside bakery that wasn’t on any list.

Sometimes the most memorable stop is the one you hadn’t planned.

Live Here For a Week

That’s perhaps the biggest difference between a local and a visitor.

Visitors collect places.

Locals collect rituals.

A morning walk through Bosco Selva.

Cycling along the Acquedotto.

An aperitivo in Locorotondo because the light is beautiful there at sunset.

An evening that ends much later than expected because someone suggested one more glass of wine.

Perhaps that’s the real secret of Alberobello.

Not the trulli.

Not the UNESCO status.

Not even the restaurants.

It’s discovering that, after a few days, you stop trying to see everything.

Instead, you begin to live here; shopping at the bakery, taking the long road home, lingering over aperitivo, returning from the coast as the hills cool in the evening.

And that’s when Alberobello quietly becomes somewhere you’ll want to come back to.

Cala Tre Buchi : A small, wild rocky cove with sandy areas, calm turquoise waters and a short path to reach it.

La Scaletta: A charming inlet with a rocky staircase, sandy patches, calm water and caves to explore. Free parking nearby.

Porto Ghiacciolo: A public beach beneath the Abbazia di Santo Stefano, known for its fresh, clear waters and relaxed atmosphere.

Cala Susca: A peaceful beach with fine sand and low rocks, with convenient roadside parking.

Porto Verde: A small, secluded beach set in lush greenery, accessed via a walking path with free parking nearby.

Cala Sottile: A hidden, local favorite with pine trees in the background and a natural, rustic feel.

Lido Bellifreschi: You’ll find a free public access section next to the lido, just look for an open spot on the sand.


Heading further south toward Torre Canne: Around Cala Maka you’ll find several beautiful natural beaches with public access, ideal for a swim and a quiet afternoon.

Driving toward Ostuni: Explore the lovely, uncrowded beaches around Torre Pozzelle, a string of small coves with sandy stretches and a wild, natural setting. Stunning but wild!
